Appropriate reading for an historical vacation

Touring through southern England at the moment. Visiting places such as the Portsmouth harbor with the impressive HMS Victory. Also visiting many bookstores, both new and old. Some of those are so full of stacks and piles of books that you can literally get lost in them.

One of the accommodations we stayed in had a few excellent books, such as Treasure Island. A very appropriate read for such a historical themed trip. We only stayed there for two nights however, and in between our busy schedule I didn’t manage to get through the whole book.

That forced me to buy a copy. I had previously seen a series of classic books which are beautifully cloth bound, and was delighted to have a reason for picking one up.

This version doesn’t have the illustrations by Mervin Peake, that the copy that I was reading does have. Which is a plus in my book, because I don’t like them. His characters all look a bit malformed. And I don’t like how the characters don’t resemble how they look in my head. Those are based on the Disney movie adaptation that I used to watch as a kid. Must watch that again.
