Time to turn over the map

It’s been a couple of weeks since I last played Final Fantasy VI. I got wiped out a couple of times on the Floating Continent and after that real life got in the way. Also, I decided to wait a bit until the physical manual would arrive that I ordered, so I could look up which potion does what. Or to see if there is an easy way to see which potion does what from the item list if you are in a battle.

The physical manual has arrived some time ago. And I got a bit more spare time, so I decided to continue with the quest, errr, Fantasy.
If you think about it, Final Fantasy is actually quite a ridiculous name. There is quite an interesting story behind the naming of the title, which I won’t go into here. But it might be one of the most self-contradictionary names in the history of video games. Implying since the first game that it is the last game in a series which has spawned at least a hundred sequels and spin-offs.
Anyway, I progressed through the Floating Continent without too much trouble. But that is mainly due to savestates. I died a couple of times and wandered aimlessly around for a bit before finding the right way through. I dread to think about playing through this part of the game without savestates.

The game then proceeds to a cool sequence involving the emperor and Kefka which ends in a rather upsetting series of events, ultimately seeing you waking up one whole year later on an almost deserted island. I guess that I have to turn over the map now. Luckily I now also have a physical copy of that.

That Kefka sure is a hateful character

About that map. When I looked at it, I noticed that it is sort of a spoiler to the game. If you bought the game and looked at the map before playing through a major part of the game, then you would have known where the story would lead. It would have been more fun if the back of the map would have been on a separate sheet in a closed envelope or something. With a sticker that said to only open it after certain events would have happened. Maybe that was the case, maybe not. I don’t know. I only got a reproduction.

When it was time to quit playing, I got told by my new granddad that I must catch some fish. Alrighty then! I walked onto the beach to find a seagull. Maybe the second part of the game will turn out to be a point-and-click adventure game…
