Physical books

Although I mostly read ebooks, I can appreciate a book more in physical form. I started reading ebooks back in 2000 on my Palm M100 PDA. Although at that time, I would still read physical books also. In the early ’10s I sold most of my physical books, except for a few, such as The Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, and the Foundation series with some other Asimov books. All pockets.

Then back in 2021, I started buying Discworld pockets again and I now have a considerable amount of them.

Because my daughter is big into reading and is building up her own collection, I started getting the itch of buying some of my all-time favorite books. I got nice copies of American Gods/Anansi Boys and Norse Mythology, also The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, both Dune and Dune Messiah, and finally The Eye of the World.

My plan is to try and limit myself because space is very limited. My plan is to buy a Wheel of Time book every month, get a nice set of The Lord of the Rings, and get Children of Dune when that comes out. That’s it. Oh, and maybe the Riftwar Saga and Farseer Trilogy. But definitely not the First Law Trilogy or the Malazan books. No, no, no…

I was a bit disappointed with the quality of the first Wheel of Time book. The pages are a little thin and not so white. Also, the binding isn’t too great. I’m tempted to get the paperback boxsets instead.

I tried to discern which Dune books would be the best to get. I have the paperback edition, and love the cover. The covers for the sequels look even better. But I wanted hardcover books. The Folio Society edition was too expensive, as was the Easton Press release. The Great Dune Trilogy is too unwieldy. I saw another edition at my book store, but I don’t think the sequels were released in that style. I would have gone for the Ace deluxe edition, but went for the Orion ones. Children of Dune should be following in March.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide is a nice hardcover edition. The other books in the series are also available in these editions, but no hardcover, only paperback.
