I’m getting rid of a lot of my Evercade collection. I’ve been on the Evercade ride since November 2020. And ever since the beginning I decided that I wanted to have all the carts that were released (except the Home Computer ones.) In the beginning, I could justify that to myself, because the platform allowed me to get acquainted with a lot of games and genres that I hadn’t played and probably wouldn’t have played otherwise.
Of course there were a few stinkers in between, like the Worms collection and the Intellivision collection. I can see how they might appeal to others, but there’re just not for me. I didn’t just get them because I was committed to getting a full set, I honestly wanted to be surprised. But as the years wear on and the games get more recent, I’m less and less enthusiastic about more and more recent releases. And collecting them all has started to become a burden instead of a joy. It doesn’t help that they’ve become much pricier than they used to be. And because I was committed, I also kept all the carts that I didn’t like or which I knew I wouldn’t play again.
So just moments ago, I made the decision that I’m getting rid of a lot of my carts and I won’t be buying every new cart that comes out.
Carts that I’m getting rid of are:
- 10. Technos Collection 1. I don’t like Double Dragon
- 16. Piko Collection 2. I’m not into sports games
- 18. Worms Collection 1. I liked Scorched Earth, but that’s it. Not Worms.
- 21. Intellivision collection 1. Not my generation. Too awkward.
- 24. Gremlin Collection 1. I knew I didn’t like Zool.
- 25. Morphcat Games Collection 1. Micromages was fun, but will never play again.
- 26. Intellivision Collection 2. Even Cloudy Mountain couldn’t convince me.
- 30. Sydney Hunter Collection. One of them was mildly fun.
- 31. Sunsoft Collection 1. Didn’t like any of the games.
- 34. Duke Nukem Collection 2. Not into boomer shooters.
- 38. Sunsoft Collection 2. Nothing here for me.
- 39. Piko Interactive Collection 4. Played some of it. Disappointing really.
- 41. Legacy of Kain Collection. I tried to like it, but I didn’t.
- 42. Metal Dragon/Life on Mars. Finished one. Won’t play the other again.
- 44. Broken Sword Collection. Don’t know why I got this. Have all the big boxes.
- 45. Tomb Raider Collection 2. This is when I decided to write this post.
Carts that I’m on the fence about are:
- 03 Data East Collection 1. Do more recent releases make this unnecessary?
- 19. Codemasters Collection 1. I’m on the fence because of Psycho Pinball.
- 22. The Bitmap Brothers Collection 1. Maybe I’ll get into The Chaos Engine someday.
- 23. Renovation Collection 1. Don’t like Valys. Maybe give the other games another chance.
- 28. Indie Heroes 2. Rather mweh.
- 29. Piko Collection 3. I really should try Legend of Wukong again.
- 43. Indie Heroes 4. I’m holding on to it for now.
Carts that I’m probably keeping are:
- 04. Interplay Collection 1. Should I like Earthworm Jim?
- 08. Mega Cat Studios Collection 1. A little Tanzer now and again might still be fun.
- 15 Jaleco Collection 1. I don’t know why.
- 20. Mega Cat Studios Collection 2. Playing those puzzlers again might be fun.
Games that I’m definitely keeping are:
- 01. Atari Collection 1. For whenever I want to play Adventure.
- 02. Namco Museum Collection 1. Galaxian!
- 05. Atari Collection 2. Everyone should have Centipede at their fingertips.
- 06. Namco Museum Collection 2. To remind me why I like Galaxian better.
- 07. Interplay Collection 2. Haven’t spend enough time with it yet.
- 09. Piko Interactive Collection 1. Much to come back to. Also Top Racer!
- 11. Xeno Crisis/Tnaglewood. This just screams “Evercade”!
- 12. The Oliver Twins Collection. Had fun with the egg. Might have again.
- 13. Atari Lynx Collection 1. Because my Lynx died. Also Loopz.
- 14. Atari Lynx Collection 2. Because I’m keeping Collection 1.
- 17. Indie Heroes Collection 1. Lots to come back to.
- 27. Alwa’s Awakening/Cathedral. Because I had so much fun with Alwa.
- 32. Full Void. Want to hang on to this one.
- 33. Duke Nukem Collection 1. So I don’t have to buy the big box.
- 35. Goodboy Galaxy / Witch n’ Wiz. Excellent cart.
- 36. Demon’s of Asteborg/Astebros. Haven’t finished with this yet.
- 37. Indie Heroes Collection 3. Donut Dodo is fun on the Alpha
- 40. Tomb Raider Collection 1. See 33.
On the Arcade front, I’ll keep:
- 01. Technos Arcade 1. Because of Combatribes.
- 02. Data East Arcade 1. Lots of cool games.
- 03. Gaelco Arcade 1. I think I want to hang on to this because of World Rally
- 04. Atari Arcade 1. Atari deserves to be played on the Alpha.
- 05. Jaleco Arcade 1. I should play this more.
- 06. Gaelco Arcade 2. Because I’m keeping Gaelco Arcade 1.
- 07. Irem Arcade 1. Some nice games here.
- 10. Piko Arcade 1. Just got this. Fighters/beat’em ups are often fun.
- 11. Toaplan Arcade 3. Also just got this in.
- 13. Toaplan Arcade 4. Not finished with this yet.
- 15. Windjammers, Karnov & Friends. Let’s see about Windjammers.
- 16. Neo Geo Arcade 1. Cool to have a copy of Metal Slug.
And I’ll get rid of:
- 08. Toaplan Arcade 1. Nothing to say really.
- 09. Toaplan Arcade 2. Same.
- 12. Data East Arcade 2. Although I like Super Burger Time.
And finally carts that I’ll not pickup are:
- 46. Gremlin Collection 2. Doesn’t appeal to me.
- 09. Roguecraft DX. Or maybe I will 😉
- 18. Taito Arcade 2. Maybe later. Probably not.
- 19. Neo Geo Arcade 2. One Metal Slug is enough for now.
- 20. Neo Geo Arcade 3. Maybe later.
- 47. Activision Collection 1. Pitfall can’t convince me. Maybe at a discount.
- 48. Rare Collection 1. No thank you.
- 10. The Llamasoft Collection. Too weird.
I haven’t picked up many Home Computer carts. I have Team17 (03) and Delphine (04). I think I’ll sell both. The Delphine adventures are best played on a PC and I have the big boxes. I’ll get Another World and Flashback for the PlayStation 4 instead. And I can play Team17 games on my amiga.
That means I’ll only get 1 more cartridge this year: 17. Taito Arcade 1. That one looks nice.
This decision creates a lot of piece of mind. No more obsessive buying. I always thought of keeping up with Evercade carts an subscription service of sorts. Just as the old book club. But while it’s nice to build up a collection, I started to feel obligated to keep up with playing them, which I couldn’t manage.
