I love Dune. I loved the books. I loved the games. And although I liked the series and the movie, I didn’t love them. Luckily there are the new movies. I love them! When I recently thought about them again, I knew I just had to have physical copies to complement my Dune collection.
And although I’m usually satisfied with buying physical movies on DVD, those are mostly older movies that I like watching on my trinitron CRT tv. These new movies however, are more fun to watch on a big tv and in high quality. Enter my first Blu-Ray discs. I never had a Blu-Ray disc before.
Ever since 1080p became a thing, I abandoned physical in favor of digital downloads and later streaming. And now I have. Watching these movies on Blu-Ray and is glorious and I’m totally back in the Dune universe. Rereading the books and listening to the Exxos soundtrack. It’s all good.
4K no less! DVDs upscaled by my PS4 look good enough for me but when I do watch a Bluray at native 720p or 1080p, it is rather a treat, with no fear of compression from streaming. Although some streamed films do look very crisp I must admit.
Yes, 4K Ultra HD. Although I don’t see a big difference with the streamed version. I’m hoping to notice less banding in the shadows. Those always annoy me.
Shadow and colour banding is always annoying, I don’t get how we have all this high resolution, and 10 bit colour depth HDR etc. and get somehow still get the annoying banding.
