Bought a very nice copy of Gateway to Apshai. Gateway to Apshai is probably the first RPG I ever played back in the day on my Commodore 64. It was one of many games on one of the cassettes that came with my C64. Of course, those were all pirated games and there was no manual in sight. My very young self often didn’t have a clue about what to do in most of the more complex games. I distinctly remember walking through the eerie halls of the dungeons in this game without a clue what I was supposed to be doing. Maybe that added to the charm. I don’t know.
Gateway to Apshai is not a real RPG of course. It’s an action adventure. Although I’m not certain about the definition of what an rpg is. I always take it quite literally: a role-playing game is any game that makes an effort to put you as a player in the role of the character(s) you’re playing with. In that sense almost every game is an rpg of course.
So while Gateway to Apshai is not a rpg, but an action adventure, it certainly is the first game that made me interested in real rpg’s.
A well deserved addition to my collection. It’s nice to read the manual and finally understand the backstory and what it is that you are supposed to do in the game. Now that I know that, I will try to reach that goal. Pure nostalgia.
