The Noord Nederlands Orkest played game music yesterday and I was there to enjoy it. The played a lot of music from games I haven’t played, like Bloodborne and Final Fantasy, and some music from games I couldn’t get through, like Bioshock and The Last of Us. Maybe I should try them again, because the music was great.
And then there were songs from games I have played, like Shadow of the Colossus, Fallout IV and Horizon Zero Dawn. Julie Elven, the original vocalist from that game also performed on a lot of songs. That was awesome! It made me look forward to playing Horizon Forbidden West.
I almost couldn’t believe that they didn’t play Skyrim, but of course that was the encore. That sent chills down my spine. One thing I can tick off from my bucket list.
Now I simply must attent a more retro inspired game music performance. I will make it my life’s goal to hear the Monkey Island theme performed. And it would also be great to hear the music from The Witcher 3 and Dune.
Oh definitely re: retro game music. Deus Ex is a must. I was rather disappointed listening to Classic FM’s series on gaming music a few years ago where it was all essentially music that would not have been out of place in films. It was great music, and introduced me to the main theme from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and included some excellent Mass Effect music, but I didn’t think Gameplay when I heard any of it, or even Title Screen. Personal taste of course but for me that would need some 90s/early 2000s music, maybe earlier. Rayman 2, Rayman, Deus Ex, Ratchet and Clank. Definitely some chiptune and electronica. There’s a Top 10 Apogee Games video on YouTube that has exactly the sort of music and sounds that really make me think of games and only games, music by Moby (the gaming music one, not the pop music one, as I later learnt!)
SotC music in concert must have been amazing, to be fair. Or some Dark Souls. I don’t actually remember the music of The Last of Us.
