I love RPGs like Baldur’s Gate, Divinity: Original Sin and Pillars of Eternity, but what I don’t like about those games is that you can’t look around and see the sky. And spending 80 hours looking at the ground depresses me. That’s why I love the Elder Scrolls, The Witcher and the Horizon games . Not because they are more action oriented. I do love tactical combat. And while it can be argued that first person or over-the-shoulder perspective doesn’t lend itself for tactical turn-based or RtwP combat as well as a more top-down approach I beg to differ. Especially modern titles like D:OS would benefit from being able to look up, and even switch to first person mode. The engine is already there. That’s why I loved the Dragon Age Origins and Inquisition. That was a good mix of tactical group-based combat mixed with open world gameplay in which you could freely look around. So after playing a few top-down games RPGs recently with first Baldur’s Gate III and Pillars of Eternity (which I still have to finish), I couldn’t resist the pull of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It’s just lovely to be so free in a game. Especially one that holds so much history. I’ve played every 3D Zelda title and finished all but Skyward Sword.
In trying to reach for the skies I had Link climb the highest tower in the first settlement I came across. Only to realize that I couldn’t actually do anything there except looking around. I must have spend ten minutes doing just that. Seeing all those high up places really makes me want to explore this world anew. It’s been quite a couple of years since I last played Breath of the Wild and only for a bit. Really playing it all the way through must have been back when it was released in 2017. But the memories are flooding back now that I’m in Hyrule once again.
