Sleep well Karlach! Having fun in Baldur’s Gate 3

Over the weekend, I made some serious progress in Baldur’s Gate 3. I started over with a new character, a warlock, and quickly got to the point where I left off with my previous one, the bard. The party mainly consists of Gale, Astarion and Shadowheart. Karlach didn’t make it. I said the wrong thing to her in camp and she attacked me. Now she’s there lying in the camp and I leave her there as an example for the others. I even drag her body with me to other camps, like in the Underdark. Now when we lie sleeping on out mats, she’s there “sleeping” as well. And I’m considering my next playthrough to be more evil…

The final battle of the weekend was against the True Soul that was trapped in the Underdark. That was a bit of a difficult battle. After the third try, I made it easier on myself by siding with the True Soul and blowing the Ogre’s Horn. That did it. I wonder if I should have gained more experience before attempting this fight. But I don’t know how though. I locked myself out of some things and there’s not a whole lot of quests to do. I heard that the third act has more quests. That will be nice.

I don’t understand all the battle mechanics and wonder how I can learn more about them. It’s not clear to me how much damage some things do. Like, you can scare people, but what impact does it have when one is frightened? And so on. I do appreciate though how not every battle ends up being a giant lake of fire like in Divinity Original Sin.

  1. Hi there! If you want to learn more about how the battle mechanics work, just look into how D&D combat works. Figuring exactly how much dmg an attack will do is impossible because it’s a roll of the dice. A roll to figure out if the attack hits, and another roll of different dice to figure out how much damage is dealt. If the ability says d8 slashing damage, that means and eight sided die is rolled for damage.

You can also try to use the environment to your advantage. Blowing enemies up does a ton of damage as well as forcing them off cliffs or into chasms.

    Happy hunting!

    • Hi! Thanks a lot for the comment! I read a bit about dnd combat and that helps, but what I missed before is that the game offers more information about spells and such. On the PS5 that’s “hidden” behind the R3 button.

That makes it clearer: For the ability stage fright for example, it states that targets have disadvantage. I read up about dnd combat and I now know that having a disadvantage means rolling two dice and using the lower result. That helps with determining whether I want to use that or not.

But success is determined on the WIS stat. And my Warlock has only 10 wis. He isn’t very wise (being a warlock doesn’t seem like a wise choice with binding a pact with all-powerful patrons.) So that ability probably isn’t right for him. I need to reconsider my stats and/or abilities.
