From LGR to Posy to vintage Midi System

Following a tweet from LGR, I stumbled into the excellent videos of Posie. Although he’s a fellow countryman, I had never seen anything from him, which is not very surprising as the video LGR references is his first video about a computer game. And what a video it is! Very enjoyable and great production value. I laughed out loud a few times.

His videos mostly center on music and technical stuff. Fascinating subjects indeed. Especially his video about Crap Hifi inspired me to dig up my old post about the music systems that I grew up with. It recounts that I rebought the Sharp WQ-T234 back in 2019. I wanted to find more information about the system I replaced that with, the Philips FCD185. I didn’t find much information. One site recounts repairing one. Incredibly, Philips still has a support page about the system from 1988, but unsurprisingly the page states that there’s no information available anymore.

Even more incredible is that someone actually had one for sale on the local online marketplace! I had to buy it of course. And one day later my wife had to accept a very large box from the delivery guy. The seller thankfully had packaged it very well. It has some minor scratches, but otherwise works fine. Look at those pill-shaped buttons and sliders!

The Philips FCD185

Nostalgia at his peak: This was my very fist CD player and I was blown away by the improvement in sound quality back then. I even have some of the first CD’s I bought to play on it, like Simply Red’s A New Flame. I remember going to the local music shop after school to take a place at the counter where they had a row of at least fifteen CD players so that you could listen to them. Happy times!

My old CDs from Simply Red, Dire Straits, Toto, Roxette and The Pet Shop Boys. Sadly, Phil Collins is missing.

The tape decks of the system, while dusty, also sound a lot better than the ones from the Sharp. And I now have a working record player again. I only have one record to test it with and that sounds okay-ish.

With the Philips FCD185, I now have a “working” record player again.

Time to get some more records I guess…
