Gamebooks backlog

The Retro Hour book has arrived! This book has the longest title of all the gamebooks I have. The complete title is: The Retro Hour: The History of Video Gaming From Those Who Made It Happen. Phew, that’s a mouth full!

The book is really wel presented. It’s sturdy with a nice sleeve. It has quite a big font, which I like as my age is starting to make reading small lettering difficult. Page numbering is where it’s supposed to be and very readable as well.

What struck me while browsing through it, is that there are a lot of pictures and illustrations in a book that’s about a pod cast show. For comparison, there are hardly any pictures in the Mysteries of Monkey Island book, that I’m currently reading. And that’s a book about a game series that’s renowned for its graphics!

The print quality of the illustrations is not the very best I’ve seen, but not bad either.

With the arrival of this book, I now officially have a backlog of gamebooks. I took a break from the 50 Years of Text Games book to read the Mysteries of Monkey Island book. And now there’s The Retro Hour book as well. No excuse to get bored I guess.

  1. I emailed Dan Wood multiple times to buy the book or PDF but sadly never received a reply. I didn’t support the book on Kickstarter but am very interested in the interview with Henk Nieborg.

Would it be possible that you send me scans or photos of the Henk Nieborg interview? Thanks in advance for your help.

  2. I have listened to the podcast now and comparing it to the pages of the interview which you were partially able to get a glimpse on in the unboxing of the book on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obPvjgkZ–0), I noticed that the printed interview actually covers topics and answers by Henk Nieborg not present in the podcast (YouTube timestamp 3:53 onwards) – so I guess it’s not a straight transcription.
